Seminar overview

The Local Government Division Seminar 2017 is centred around the theme of identifying and addressing the current challenges and the emerging technological developments which local authority engineers have to address and adapt to in the areas of transportation and water supply. Other issues Engineers need to address include capacity issues for a growing population and expanding economic activity all against a backdrop of limited funding for local authority engineering projects and a changing delivery model through private sector initiatives.

Alongside these challenges, new technologies and public expectations are expanding the range of engineering options which local authority engineers must think about for new transport, civic buildings and housing projects. Sustainable infrastructure with intelligent features is emerging in planning for local communities as societies seek to create sustainable transport and energy use

While enhancing the quality of life for citizens. Local Authority engineers will need to show leadership to adapt to these new ways of engineering services for the local community.

Irelands engineering community has always looked outward to international trends in technology over the last 150 years in the transport, energy and building technology sectors so the new sustainable technologies of today are just the latest evolution of this trend which has always been changing the local authority engineering model.

The Local Government Division Seminar 2017 will discuss how local authority engineers might respond to the changes associated with these new sustainable technologies, alongside the maintenance of our existing infrastructure as Ireland economic growth and the growing public awareness of sustainability places new expectations on local authority engineers in terms of engineering solutions.
